Your child matters!
Blackberries New Nurture Rooms
Here at Blackberries, we want to be able to offer that extra level of support to the parents and build a solid team around a child to ensure that the child develops and makes good practice. Your child is at the forefront of every decision made about improvements. We have recently revamped our settings and incorporated a Nurture room at every setting. These rooms are inclusive to all children across all nurseries. Sometimes it can used to support a child as a safe space when they get overwhelmed, but they are used by all children to help them develop in a purposeful environment.
Welcome to the Nurture Room!
What are nurture classes:
- Supporting all children through nurture interventions.
- Supporting children’s individual needs.
- Helping to develop children’s language.
- A time for focused activities.
- A sensory area provided for the children to explore.
How do we support your children through our nurture sessions?
The Nurture groups are designed to engage and develop all children that come to Blackberries. Not all children will be able access the current EYFS curriculum due to different developmental barriers but that is okay, because every child matters and we tailor of curriculums to support every individual child.
How do we adapt the curriculum?
Firstly, we use our parents as partners initiative to ensure that the parents have an input at every stage of the process. We use parent consultations and meetings to discuss the individual child, their likes, interests, and dislikes. From this, we can build a picture of the child and adapt our teaching and planning to suit the child.
NEW SEND Curriculum
We are looking to develop our very own SEND curriculum, to further our offer and ensure that every child make more than good progress during their time at Blackberry House Day Nursery.
Parent forums
To build on our parents as partners initiative, we are going to introduce regular parent forums. The idea of this will be to build a community feel, bringing parents together to discuss different topics in a less formal format.
Our nurture classes at each setting will allow us to individualise the learning for the children based around their interest and to maximise the possibility of progress. We look to promote more life skills, independence, and emotional regulation for these children in a calm and stimulating environment that meets their needs.
The nurture group environment is designed to be welcoming and safe. This helps support the children to develop relationships with their peers and teachers, to support self-esteem and to have a greater understanding of and ability to express their emotions. Groups are small or carried out on an individual basis at first.
Benefits of nurture classes:
- Supporting children with SEND
- Supporting children’s individual needs
- Helping to develop children’s language (SaLT)
- Support children’s behaviour
- A time for focused activities
- A sensory area provided for the children to explore
The key areas we will work on with the children are:
- Self-help and independence
- Physical and sensory development
- Emotional regulation
- Cognition and learning
- Social interactions
At Blackberries we do have specific 4-hour SEN sessions which enables children to attend for shorter periods. This supports their settling in and routine. Once settled if we feel your child could attend longer sessions, we will discuss this on an individual basis, and this will be reviewed regularly.
Rooms used are multi-functional as we do not want to take the opportunity away from other children using the room. Focused sessions take place during the morning and afternoon.
Overall interventions will play a huge part in the development of the nurture classes across the settings. Our nurture classes will be made up of the following interventions:
- Lego Therapy
- Gardening Club
- Little Chef’s
- SaLT sessions
- Focused activity sessions
- Sensory circuits
- SEN Groups
These interventions give us an understanding of what the children can do to achieve EYFS goals. While working on these interventions we can use others to support and promote the core areas of the nurture classes.
Meet the teams
Every setting has a setting SENCo, they will be your child’s key worker and safe person. Also, at every setting we are building our SEND support teams, to allow great support for your child and experiences from a variety of different people.
